House-Fort
de Bezmiliana

In the 18th century, the King Charles III ordered the construction of this house-fort, captained by the military engineers José Grane and Francisco de Gozar, who erected this building in 1766 as a means of defence against the pirates from the coast, mainly from Holland and England.

Both façades of this house-fort are delimited by a classic square-shaped surface with exterior stonewalls and by two diagonally opposed towers strategically placed for better defence.

In 1992, the architect Álvaro Mendiola started the restauration of the House-Fort Bezmiliana, and nowadays it owes its reputation to its relocation as an artistic space, where cultural activities and art exhibitions are periodically held. The renovation works ended in April 1992 with the contribution of the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

Rincón de la Victoria (Málaga)

Cave of the
Treasury

The Cave of the Treasury is located in one of the Cantales, or small cliffs. These are promontory shaped cliffs from the Jurassic Era, which overlook the Mediterranean coast. The sea is the main erosive agent that has contributed to the formation of the current relief of the Cantales. Over the millennia, the caves and cliffs have been formed and now these are the most characteristic elements of this landscape.

Rincón de la Victoria has one of the only three cavities of marine origin known in the world. This is the only one like this on the European continent. The other two were discovered in Asia and Central America.

The cave is above all well-known because of its legend about the existence of a hidden treasure in one of its grottos during the Arab period. This tradition is reflected in the writings of the 17th century of Fray Antonio Agustín de Milla y Suazo. The treasure was hidden by the emperor of the Almoravid dynasty, Tashfin ibn Ali in the 12th century.

La Cala del Moral (Rincón de la Victoria)

Cave of Nerja

The Cave of Nerja is situated 158 metres above sea level, and with its 4,823 metres, this is one of caves with the highest topographic development in Andalusia.

Thanks to the rich heritage of the Cave of Nerja, one year after its opening to the public, this was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, according to Decree No. 988 of 25 May 1961.

In 2006, the Cave of Nerja is declared a Site of Cultural Interest with the category of Archaeological Zone, according to Decree No. 194 of 31 October 2006.

It has three entrances, two of them are subcircular, and beside one of them, there is an entrance enabled one year after the discovery, in 1960, for the access of visitors.

Opening times: From 1 January to 15 May, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Frigiliana

Located in the eastern most area of the Axarquía region in Málaga, in the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. Frigiliana faces the Mediterranean Sea, and it has a population of approx. 3,000 inhabitants.

Situated 300 metres above the sea level and with a subtropical microclimate, its acclaimed and award-winning Historical Quarter of Moorish heritage emerges as if waking up from the past. Its narrow, winding and steep streets, passageways, ramparts and ravelins form a complex urban pattern made up by little houses arranged one on top of another.

This architecture has been described as the purest popular architectural complex of Arab origin in the province of Málaga. Among the official recognitions granted, we would like to highlight the 1st National Prize for the Beautification of the Peoples of Spain in 1982.
